Battling the waves of sea sickness

Jul 05, 2023

Sea sickness: A crew's guide to smooth sailing.

Sea sickness is a distress that at some point can affect even the most experimented sailors or superyacht crew members. Prevention is the key for a successful cruising.

Avoiding seasickness is of utmost importance for yacht crew members who spend extended periods at sea. While it may seem daunting for individuals prone to motion sickness, it is essential to understand that superyachts are designed to navigate calm waters, minimising the likelihood of encountering rough conditions. However, it's always wise to be prepared for the unexpected.

The Evolution team has collaborated with experienced crew members and captains to gather valuable insights on preventing seasickness specifically tailored to yacht crew. Here are some tried-and-tested tips to help crew members stay comfortable and productive while on duty:

Ginger

As the go-to remedy for seasickness, ginger has proven benefits. Whether consumed raw, in capsule form, or in beverages, it can help alleviate symptoms. Yacht chefs should always ensure a fresh supply of ginger is available in the galley, allowing crew members to easily incorporate it into their superyacht meals.

Hydration

Staying hydrated is crucial to prevent dehydration, which can worsen seasickness. Crew members should drink plenty of water throughout the day, especially when working under the sun or engaging in physically demanding tasks.

Light Snacking

Eating small, frequent portions can help keep nausea at bay. Biscuits are a popular choice, known for their ability to settle the stomach. Crew members should have access to snacks on board, ensuring they have a steady supply of easily digestible foods.

Fresh Air

Spending time in well-ventilated areas and getting fresh air whenever possible can help alleviate symptoms.

Crew members should take short breaks on deck during their downtime to enjoy the sea breeze and natural surroundings.

Rest and Sleep

Adequate rest is essential for maintaining overall well-being and minimising seasickness symptoms. When off duty, crew members should prioritise getting enough sleep to allow their bodies to recover and adjust to the motion of the yacht.

Avoid Strong Odours

Certain smells, such as fuel or strong cleaning agents, can trigger or worsen seasickness. Crew members should minimise exposure to strong odours and ensure proper ventilation in enclosed spaces.

Accupressure Wristbands

Many crew members find relief by wearing acupressure wristbands, which apply pressure to specific points on the wrist believed to alleviate nausea. These bands can be effective preventive measures and are readily available at marine supply stores.

Professional Medical Advice

If natural remedies and preventive measures are insufficient, crew members should consult a medical practitioner that can provide additional recommendations or prescribe medication if necessary.

Evolution Yacht Agents offers a virtual Medical Concierge service for all your medical questions and consultations. You can get in touch with your Evolution local concierge team to schedule an appointment.

Dr. Gonzalo is a registered general practitioner in Spain as well as Sports Medicine doctor and he is available for same day video consultations with guests and crew, whatever your location. He can consult and provide prescriptions as well as referrals for specialists or tests and scans as necessary.

It is important to remember that seasickness affects individuals differently, and what works for one person may not work for another. Yacht crew members should experiment with different strategies to find what suits them best. Regular communication with the captain and fellow crew members can foster a supportive environment, where experiences and coping mechanisms can be shared.

By implementing these tips and prioritising personal well-being, yacht crew members can navigate their responsibilities with confidence, ensuring a smoother and more enjoyable experience while at sea.
