Sunscreen is an absolute necessity on board a superyacht during the summer days. The vast chance of acquiring skin problems when sunscreen is not applied to protect from UV rays and the toxic components of choosing the wrong one causing marine hazards, should not be ignored. UVA
and
UVB
radiation. Sunscreen is a simple addition to your guest’s morning routine that allows them to
enjoy
time out in the
sun
while swimming or laying out on the superyacht sun deck,
worry-free.
It is important to note that when sun protection is not applied, there is an increased risk of developing skin cancer, wrinkles, and dark spots. Therefore, by acting as a barrier to sunlight, sunscreen stops ultraviolet radiation from penetrating the skin. Thus, sunscreen does not only prevent you from sunburns. While swimming in the sea, anyone could be distracted by the colourful and stunning Mediterranean fish, however, do keep in mind that the sun’s rays are still damaging through the water as sunlight may enter 1000 meters into the ocean.
The
right type of sunscreen to have on board is a reef-friendly one to avoid toxins affecting the marine ecosystem. Reef-friendly refers mainly to an
absence
of “Oxybenzone” and “Octinoxate”, which are two
UV-blocking
chemicals
that are damaging to marine life, acting as
coral reef bleaching agents. However, there are a few other components that are best to avoid, to protect marine life.
When
coral reef
bleaches, it makes it more
susceptible
to being
sick and it can ultimately lead to its demise.
However, while sunscreen is not the only culprit for coral reef bleaching; it is one your guests should be mindful of when travelling on their superyacht.
