Water covers about 71% of the Earth’s surface with its vast oceans, seas and lakes. Whilst the planet’s waters have always offered sustenance for the communities of all cultures that have lined its shores, 21st century economics are increasingly diverse and complex, and maritime economics are no exception.

Sustainability that meets the goals of global environmental and climate objectives is at the heart of the “blue economy”, which is deeply oriented towards innovation and growth. Awareness of the blue economy is expanding and so are its many strands of interrelated activities. It is certainly a significant global sector, in which our superyacht industry participates, and one that is steadily increasing in prominence.

But what is exactly the blue economy?

The principal idea of the blue economy is to emulate the behaviour of natural ecosystems. In them, the generation of waste is almost zero, and everything is usable or transformable. In other words, it seeks to reintroduce all waste back into the economic process as raw materials for other products.
