Water Activities 2: Gliding the waves
As the Spanish summer sunshine continues to shine down, what could be better than taking a refreshing dip in the cool blue Mediterranean?
In our previous post we suggested some water sports below and above the water, and now we turn to the most popular trends in skimming the surface of the sparkling waves. Kayak
These small, narrow boats are ideal for exploring the Iberian coastline. Use a double-bladed paddle to glide forward at a steady pace and discover deliciously hidden beaches that are only accessible by water. Kayaking is especially popular in the Balearics. If you’re visiting the Northern coast of Ibiza don’t miss the chance to explore its secret coves! Kayak enthusiasts in Tenerife often report the sublime experience of being accompanied by dolphins.
Paddle-surfing
Once you’ve mastered the standing-upright technique, the rest as they say is plain sailing. With tranquil waters this can be a truly meditative experience, and if accompanied by a partner and sunset, a deeply romantic one. Paddle yoga is a popular new trend, as pioneered by creative yoga teachers who will guide you into flexible yoga posture with the mat replaced by a paddle board on the sea.
Wind-Surf
Sailing and surfing combine as you navigate the encounter between the wind and water. Unlike surfing which seeks the thrill of ever higher waves, wind-surfing favours a more tranquil sea. When the wind picks up you can feel its power in the sail that you’re holding, and as the waves roll below, you roll with them. Beginners generally take a couple of lessons to get the hang of this sport, although the basics can be learned in a day.
Jetski
Also known as a water-scooter, the jetski experience is all about taking a solid piece of equipment for a high adrenaline ride! Start at a steady pace… you might even find that leisurely cruising gives you more of a chance to enjoy the changing scenery and skyline than a thrill-of-the-chase high speed lurch. Jet-ski rental companies generally also offer group activities and tours which can take the jet-ski experience to yet another level.
