Changes in stamping regulations at the Spanish border control

Dec 28, 2023

Important Update for Crew Members Traveling to Spain in 2024.

The new regulation is crucial for ensuring compliance with Spanish immigration regulations and maintaining a smooth process for crew members.

As of January 1, 2024, a new regulation will come into effect impacting crew members traveling to Spain for vessel-related activities. The key change is that only individuals in possession of a seaman book will be permitted to undergo stamping outside the Schengen area in Spanish ports.

For the time being, this regulation only affects to crew members entering Palma de Mallorca. Although we have not received official statements from other Spanish port offices it will not be long before we do and so we also are recommending all crew to obtain their seaman discharge books as a vital document for their stay in Europe.

Mallorcan border control announcement.

Border control authorities in Palma de Mallorca port have officially announced that, starting in 2024, a seaman’s discharge book will be a mandatory requirement when requesting stamping appointments at port immigration offices.

It’s important to note that each port will implement this requirement at its own pace. Crew members should be prepared for this change and ensure they have the necessary documentation to facilitate a smooth stamping process.

Implications for crew members without a seaman's book.

Those arriving to work on a vessel without a seaman book will no longer be eligible for stamping outside the Schengen area. Consequently, the 90-day limit from their entry into Europe will continue to be enforced. After this period, individuals without the necessary documentation would be considered irregular in Spain unless they leave the Schengen territory or rectify their situation within the stipulated time frame.

This rule is applicable to all crew members arriving from outside the Schengen area, regardless of the vessel's flag.

Additional requirements for disembarking crew members.

For crew members from third countries wishing to disembark and enter Spanish territory, certain requirements must be met. This includes possessing tickets for departure within the 90-day tourist limit, demonstrating financial means, and providing either an official invitation letter or proof of accommodation.
