Tips on scuba diving in Balearic Islands

Aug 10, 2022

Whether you are an experienced scuba diver looking to explore new territories or a first-time diver considering taking the plunge, this is a highly recommended location for all levels.

The underwater ecosystems that surround Balearic Islands are as breathtakingly beautiful as they are fascinatingly strange.

Popular dive sites include enclosed caves and caverns, and open spaces, where you can find a wide variety of marine life. The landscapes below the water are as diverse as those in the open air. Posidonia sea grass meadows move with the breeze of the currents, and colourful small fish dart in and out of the coral reefs. The occasional shipwreck on the seabed is now home to curious octopus and morays that glide through the open windows.

The recommended season for scuba diving in the Balearics is from May to October. Water temperatures reach a maximum of 26ºC, and although the sensation under the water may feel cooler you will be protected by a wetsuit. There are many diving centres around the islands which offer accompanied dives with certified PADI or SSI instructors. Introductory diving sessions offer an introduction to the use of the equipment and practice dives in shallower waters. Those who are already more confident can go on longer and deeper adventures. The average underwater visibility is between 10-30 metres, and this can even reach 30-40 metres during the summer, so prepare to be submerged in a breath taking 360º experience.

Where to dive in Mallorca

Isla del Sec

The tiny island called Isla del Sec is located in the west of the Palma Bay, and its one of Mallorca’s most popular diving places. It features 3 possible dives, one between 5 to 18 metres, and 2 boat wrecks from 18 to 30 metres for the advanced divers. Both wrecks are now home of and artificial reed and attract a lot of marine life. If you dive here, you would be able to see barracudas, moray eels, cuttlefish and if you are lucky, maybe even an octopus.

Llebeig Cabrera

This is just one of the many dive sites around the uninhabited island and National Park of Cabrera, in the south of the island. Visibility is incredible, advanced divers can descend to a depth of 30 metres and could be able to see big fishes such as barracudas or maybe occasionally also a big tuna.

Where to dive in Menorca

Pont d’En Gil

Pont d’En Gil is considered by many divers as the best cave dive in the Western Mediterranean. It’s located on the far western tip of Menorca, and it reaches 220 metres in length and is brimming with stalagmites and stalactites. The entrance is only 12 metres down making it accessible to all certified divers. Inside of it, you can surface throughout the dive to take in the spectacular cave ceiling. At the end of the cavern, there is a small beach.

Where to dive in Ibiza

Don Pedro

If you like wreck dives, this is for you. A wreck of epic proportions just a few minutes away of the Ibiza port. The 142 metre Don Pedro became the Mediterranean’s largest shipwreck accessible to recreational divers since it sank in 2007. This dive is for advanced divers as it starts at a depth of 26 metres and goes as deep as 46 metres. You can’t access the inside, but you can explore the ship’s wheelhouse and its huge propellers.

Where to dive in Formentera

Mariana Fish Factory

This dive site is located near de island of Es Pardell in northwest Formentera. It was a fish factory that collapsed during a storm around 30 years ago. Dive boats can moor to the top of the platform at 11 metres, and advanced divers can reach 33 metres in depth. In this dive place, you can see barracudas, conger eels and even lobsters.
